Mathematics and Statistics Colloquium (Nov 6)

Speaker: Dr. Mimi Dai (University of Illinois Chicago)

Time and Location: Thursday, November 06, 2025. 4-5pm at IES 110 (refreshment 3:00pm on the 5th floor of BVM)

Title: Constructive study for fluid equations

Abstract: Most of the partial differential equations arising from fluid dynamics are nonlinear, for instance the Euler equation, Navier-Stokes equation, surface quasi-geostrophic equation to name a few. The nonlinearity prevents us to find exact solutions for these equations in general. We will discuss a few methods of constructing solutions to the fluid equations, some important properties of the constructed solutions and their indications on the fundamental question of well-posedness/ill-posedness.

A short bio about the speaker:

Dr. Mimi Dai obtained her PhD in Mathematics from UC Santa Cruz in 2012 and is currently a Full Professor in the Department of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). Her research focuses on the analysis of PDEs, particularly those arising from fluids, and she has authored about 60 publications.

Dr. Dai's influential work has been recognized with several prestigious honors and fellowships, including the von Neumann Fellowship at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton (2021-2022); the Ladyzhenskaya Lectureship by the Committee for Women in Mathematics, International Mathematical Union in 2022; the AMS Centennial Fellowship from the American Mathematical Society (2022-2023). She is the Principal Investigator on multiple grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF).
